- Troubleshooting Flowchart
-
-
- 1. IS "CDLOCK" UNLOCKING SOFTWARE INSTALLED ON YOUR
- HARD DRIVE? IF IT IS, CONTINUE TO NEXT STEP; IF NOT:
-
- Before you can enter the access keys for the Typeface
- families you selected, you must install CDLOCK.
- To do this, log to your CD-ROM drive, change directory
- to the CDLOCK subdirectory, and type CDLINST. CDLINST
- will install CDLOCK on your hard drive. When the
- install process is completed, reboot your computer.
- CDLOCK will now be activated and the system is ready
- to enter access keys. To enter the keys, log to the
- CDLOCK subdirectory on your hard drive and type CDKEYS.
- CDKEYS will prompt you for your serial number, the
- volume numbers you wish to unlock, and the keys for
- that volume. IMPORTANT: When entering the volume
- (referred to as the "Group" by CDKEYS) you must enter
- the letters VOL followed by the volume number (no
- spaces). For example, the correct group name for
- volume 35 would be VOL35.
-
-
- 2. WERE YOU ABLE TO ENTER YOUR ACCESS KEYS WITHOUT
- RECEIVING ANY ERROR MESSAGES? IF YES, CONTINUE TO
- NEXT STEP; IF NOT:
-
- If CDKEYS informs you the keys you have entered for a
- particular group are not valid for the serial number
- you entered, verify that the serial number and each
- key was entered correctly. If it appears that all
- information was entered correctly, you may have received
- the wrong key or one of the characters in the keys may
- have been miscommunicated during your phone conversation
- with NEC. Contact Technical Support at 800-366-3632.
- A member of the Technical Support staff will make sure
- you are entering keys correctly and verify your keys.
-
- 3. HAS THE ADOBE FONT INSTALLER BEEN INSTALLED ON YOUR
- HARD DRIVE? IF YES, CONTINUE TO THE NEXT STEP; IF NOT:
-
- The Adobe font installer will install the typefaces which
- you have unlocked into your applications. To install the
- font installer, log to your CD-ROM drive, change directory
- to the ADOBE subdirectory, and type install. Installer
- will copy files to your hard drive. It also will ask you
- to select the applications you will be using the typefaces
- in and what drive and directory those applications are in.
- Installer will also ask you if you wish to install a
- Downloader. A downloader is needed to send your printer
- fonts to the printer. If your printer is attached to a
- parellel port on your computer, install PCSEND. If your
- printer is attached via the serial port, install PSDOWN.
- If you have two printers or may be changing printers, you
- may install both downloaders.
-
- 4. DID THE ADOBE INSTALLER DETECT THE TYPEFACES WHICH
- WERE UNLOCKED? IF YES, CONTINUE TO THE NEXT STEP. IF
- YOU RECEIVED AN ERROR STATING `NO VALID TYPEFACES WERE
- FOUND':
-
- The unlocking keys may have been incorrectly entered.
- It is possible to enter the access keys incorrectly
- without receiving any error message. This will occur
- if the wrong Group name was entered. The Group name must
- be entered exactly as intended or the CDLOCK software
- will not unlock the group (see step 1). To verify the
- access keys have been entered correctly, execute a DIR of
- your CD-ROM drive. You should see a subdirectory for
- each typeface volume which has been unlocked. If you do
- not see a subdirectory, one of the following is possible:
-
- * The Group name was entered incorrectly (see step 1). If
- this is the case, delete the file CDKEYS.DAT from the
- CDLOCK subdirectory on your hard drive. Execute CDKEYS
- again and reenter your access codes.
-
- * The Group names were entered correctly but the CDACCESS
- program is not being executed in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
- When you installed the CDLOCK software (step 1) the
- following line should have been added to your AUTOEXEC.BAT
- file: c:\cdlock\cdaccess . If this line does not appear
- in your AUTOEXEC.BAT, you must add it. When your system
- is booting you should see messages on your screen
- indicating that CDACCESS is loading. If after verifying
- the appropriate line is in your AUTOEXEC.BAT or adding it,
- if you don't see any messages on your screen during boot,
- make sure you are not executing a menu or shell before
- CDACCESS has a chance to load. If this is the case,
- modify your AUTOEXEC.BAT file so CDACCESS loads before any
- shell or menu.
-
- * The CDKEYS.DAT file may be corrupted if you still don't
- see any volume subdirectories even after verifying the
- proper Group names and proper AUTOEXEC.BAT file. To check
- this, log to the CDLOCK subdirectory on your hard drive and
- view the CDKEYS.DAT file using the DOS TYPE command.
- (type cdkeys.dat). The characters in this file should
- appear in a very specific format:
-
- Misc
- Code Serial # Vol # Key-1 Key-2 Key-3
- XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXX volXX XXXXX XXXXX XXXXX
-
- If the serial number, volume numbers and keys are not
- exactly as you entered them or if the data does not appear
- in perfectly alligned columns, the file is corrupt. If
- this is the case, delete the CDKEYS.DAT file and reenter
- your keys. If you aren't sure if this file is correct or
- not, call Technical Support at 800-388-8888.
-
- If every aspect of access key entry seems correct, but the
- Adobe installer still finds no typefaces, there may be a
- software conflict between CDLOCK and another memory
- resident application being run on your system. To eliminate
- all possible conflicts, it is best to create a boot disk and
- boot your system from the A: drive. If you have a copy of a
- DOS disk you may use this. If you do not, you can create a
- bootable disk by placing a blank disk in your A: drive and
- issuing the DOS command FORMAT A: /S . This will format the
- disk in the A: drive and transfer the needed system files to
- make the disk bootable. When the format is complete copy
- the COMMAND.COM file from the root directory of the C: drive
- to the A: drive. It will be necessary to create an
- AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS file on the boot disk. Use a
- word processor or the DOS editor EDLIN to create this file.
- If you use a word processor, make sure you save the file in
- in ASCii or text format. MAKE SURE YOU SAVE THE FILES TO
- THE A: DRIVE. The files should contain only the statements
- which are currently in your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS
- files which pertain to your CD-ROM drive and the CDLOCK
- software. Don't include other devices such as memory
- managers or menus. If you aren't sure which lines to
- include, contact the manufacturer of your CD-ROM drive. The
- lines which are needed for CDLOCK are:
-
- In the AUTOEXEC: c:\cdlock\cdaccess
- In the CONFIG: device=c:\cdlock\cdlock.sys
-
- Boot your system with the boot disk in the A: drive. Log to
- your CD-ROM drive, change directory to the Adobe
- subdirectory, and run the Install program. If the installer
- still does not detect any valid typefaces, contact Technical
- Support at 800-388-8888.
-
- 5. THE TYPEFACES ARE INSTALLED, BUT ARE NOT DOWNLOADING TO
- THE PRINTER PROPERLY.
-
- Make sure you are using the proper downloader. If you have
- a serial printer, use PSDOWN. If you have a parellel
- printer, use PCSEND. When using PSDOWN, make sure the
- communications parameters in the PSDOWN setup match the
- parameter specified in your printer's operating manual. To
- view the PSDOWN setup, choose "Select a Communications Port"
- from the PSDOWN main menu.
-
- When using PCSEND, make sure the complete command is being
- used. You must specify where the fonts should be sent, to
- the printer's hard disk (if available) or RAM. To send
- fonts to the printer's hard disk, you must include a -h at
- the end of the PCSEND command (see examples in Type Gallery
- manual). To send fonts to the printer's memory, you must
- include a -f at the end of the command.
-
-
- If you are experiencing other problems or are still having
- difficulties, please call Technical Support at 800-388-8888.
